| Press Release Green Roof Interpretive Center and Garden Classroom: Highlight of the New St. Paul Firestation No.1 Headquarters

(Minneapolis, MN) The new St. Paul Firestation No.1 Headquarters will host a state-of-the-art Green Roof Interpretive Center and Garden Classroom. The conceptual design includes an approximate 9,000 square foot green roof featuring over 80 species of native and ornamental plants, a vegetable garden, and wildlife habitat that will include a series of educational/ interpretive stations. Some innovative techniques being planned include demonstrating non-point source pollution reduction methods, interpreting water quality monitoring data, and providing rooftop gardening opportunities for the fire fighters. The educational and interpretive information will be made accessible to the public via educational exhibits and interpretive displays and situated around a multi-purpose plaza space. The entire green roof and plaza area will also incorporate a supplemental stormwater reservoir layer to maximize the storage capacity and therefore the volume reduction potential of the installation.
The Green Roof Interpretive Center and Garden Classroom is entering the schematic design phase, to be designed by Abraham + Associates. Abraham + Associates is also providing sustainability and LEED consultation for Collaborative Design Group, the Firestation architects. The funding for the green roof is made possible in part by a grant from the Capital Region Watershed District. Additional grants are being sought to provide funding for performance monitoring and evaluation.
Installation of the Green Roof Interpretive Center is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2009.
